FAQ for New York doulas
Allies also credentials doulas in New Jersey.
Medicaid facts checked November 3, 2026 against eMedNY Doula Services Policy Manual and NY Department of Health: Doula Provider Enrollment.
Yes. Since March 1, 2024, New York Medicaid covers doula services statewide for fee-for-service and managed care members, during pregnancy and up to 12 months after the pregnancy ends, whatever the outcome. The services need a recommendation from a licensed practitioner, and the State Health Commissioner's statewide standing order counts as one, so clients need no separate referral.
Up to eight perinatal visits per pregnancy, before or after the birth, plus one labor and delivery encounter. Each visit must be at least 30 minutes with the client and can be in person or by telehealth. Labor and delivery support is in person, with a licensed provider attending the birth.
Through Allies, up to $84 an hour for a routine prenatal or postpartum visit through Medicaid, and labor and delivery support is paid on top of the visits. We handle the claims and send you guaranteed payments every two weeks.
An NPI, age 18 or older, current adult and infant CPR certification, doula liability insurance and a completed Medicaid Doula Directory form. You also qualify through one of two pathways. Training: at least 24 hours of doula training and support at three or more births. Experience: 30 births or 1,000 hours in the last ten years, plus three recommendations.
No license is required. New York Medicaid treats doulas as public health workers who qualify through the training or the work experience pathway, not a state license. Enrolled doulas revalidate every five years with six hours of continuing education a year.
